Gear
A skater’s first derby practice is free, so they can try it out and make sure SDYRD is a great fit (This does not apply to skaters starting in Skate Academy. They must enroll and finish that first). Full gear is required to participate in practice:
- Helmet
- Mouth guard (required - we do not loan these. We recommend the youth SISU 3D mouthguard)
- Knee pads
- Elbow pads
- Wrist guards
- Roller skates
We have most gear and skates available to borrow except mouth guards. Gear is also available for purchase at Fritzy’s Roller Skate Shop - though we recommend not waiting until right before the first practice to shop, its important that they have the proper time to try on and test our their new skates or gear.
Levels of Play
Fundamentals Of Derby A focused class for newer or returning skaters to fine-tune the skills required to be a safe and effective derby player. We emphasize core strength, body positioning, transitions, stops, skating in tight spaces, quick movements, and building confident muscle memory for gameplay scenarios. Prerequisites: Completion of Skate Academy Level 3 OR Approval based on prior experience (case-by-case review)
Starbursts- ages 10 and Under
Depending on participation, we may form in-house teams, explore regional travel, and schedule fun scrimmages to introduce younger skaters to the sport.
Shooting Stars - ages 10-17
For skaters ages 10 and up working toward full contact and advanced gameplay. Focused on gaining experience through scrimmages and regional competition. Will play regionally in Southern California and may travel as far as Arizona.
